Dance Lessons for Toddlers in Charlotte

dance lessons for toddlers in charlotte
Dancers Unite, the dance studio I own with my mother and sister, takes great pride in our dance lessons for toddlers.  We work hard to balance learning with fun.  We also have longer classes for toddlers than many other dance studios in the Charlotte area – our dance lessons for 2 year olds are 45 minutes, our dance lessons for 3 year olds are 1 hour, and our dance lessons for 4 year old to Pre-K are 1 hour.  The toddler dance classes are combination dance classes that include ballet, tap, tumbling and creative movement.

Want to see a preview of our dance lessons for yourself?  Then check out our montage of some of our different 2-5 year old dance classes from our youtube channel!

Contemporary Dance Class in Charlotte North Carolina

contemporary class charlotte north carolina
My dance studio Dancers Unite is one of the only studios in Charlotte offering Contemporary dance classes to teens who do not compete.  Contemporary is a dance form that is becoming increasingly popular, and you may have noticed it on the popular dance show, So You Think You Can Dance.  It incorporates jazz movements with modern elements.

Our contemporary classes are a combination class of Contemporary and Lyrical.  The dance classes include choreography that often tells a story or is influenced by the mood of the song.  Additionally, choreography often includes leaps, jumps, turns and acrobatic work that students work on in class.

The Lyrical/Contemporary class is offered for students in 7th to 12th grade.  There is a beginner level class starting after Labor Day on Thursday evenings from 6:45-7:45 PM.  There is also a more advanced level class on Wednesday from 6:30-7:45 PM.  Students in the advanced class are required to also take ballet, as the technique learned in ballet will help them in the Lyrical/Contemporary Class.

While Ballet is the only class required for advanced students, there are many other classes at Dancers Unite that can help students in both the Beginner and Advanced Contemporary Dance Classes.  These classes include jumps, leaps and turns, strength & conditioning and tumbling.  For more information on these class times, please see our Charlotte Dance Class Page.

Charlotte Dance Instruction

charlotte dance instruction
One of the things that makes Dancers Unite so great is our amazing faculty.  We have a wonderful staff of quality dance instructors from a wide variety of backgrounds.  I am very thankful to work with such a talented group of teachers and choreographers.

In addition to our great staff, Dancers Unite takes great pride in making sure our students receive lots of attention from their dance teachers.  In particular with our youngest dance classes (ages 2 to Pre-K) each dance class has at least 1 teacher to every 5 students.  The rest of our dance classes have a class limit of 15.  We strongly believe that the more attention the dancers receive, the better the dancers they will be.

For more information about our staff, please see our Dance Instructor Bio Page.

Dance Classes Age 3 Charlotte

I started dance when I was four years old, but my younger sister Elizabeth (Dancers Unite co-founder) started when she was 3.  Three is a great age to start dance classes, so if your child is 3 now is a good time to register him or her for a dance class starting in the fall.

Our dance classes for 3 year olds are 1 hour long.  They include creative movement activities, but due to the class length and the curriculum our dance teachers use, the classes are not limited to just movement activities.  Students in these classes learn tap and ballet terminology.  They also work on gross motor skills in the tumbling section of class.

Students in our 3 year old classes also get ample attention from their teachers.  Class size is limited to 1 teacher per 5 students.  Due to this class size limit, it is important to register in advance for these classes if you want a particular class time.

To see class times for our 3 year old dance classes, please see our Dance Class Page.  I hope to be teaching your 3 year old this fall!

Competition Dance Team in Charlotte

competition dance team charlotte

I have already received questions and inquiries about our Competition Company for next year.  So for those of you who have wondered, I have more information about the Dance Competition Company Auditions.

On Saturday June 11th, all dancers interested in auditioning for the 2011 Competition Company will come to the studio at 9:00 AM.  The dancers will be split up by age, and the dancers will learn combinations in lyrical, hip hop, jazz and tap.  If you for instance have never taken tap before do not worry; you can sit out during the tap section as you will only have to audition for the dance styles familiar to you.  The competition workshop will run from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.

The next day, on Sunday June 12th, dancers will come back for the audition from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.  During the Dance Competition Company Audition, dancers will perform the combinations learned the day before and they will be able to show any dance moves that were not part of the combinations (such as a leap, split, etc.).

Both the workshop & audition cost $60 per dancer (there is a discount for Current Competition Company Members; please contact the studio if you are currently competing with Dancers Unite for more information).  You can register for both by registering for the Workshop online, please see the Competition Company Dance Audition Page for more information.

Strength and Stretch Class in Charlotte NC

charlotte nc strength stretch class

The 2011-2012 dance year will officially begin Tuesday September 6, 2011.  In addition to the current dance classes our dance studio offers, we are adding additional new dance classes next year.  One of those dance classes is Strength & Stretch.

In this class, dancers work both on flexibility and strength.  Students will be exposed to a number of stretches as well as strength and conditioning exercises.  This is a great companion class to many of the other classes DU offers, such as jazz, lyrical/contemporary, tumbling and ballet.  It is also great for any dancer who would like to one day try out for the DU Competition Company or their high school dance team.

The class is for 7th to 12th grade students.  It meets on Thursday evenings from 6:00-6:45 PM.  Since the class focuses solely on strength and conditioning and no choreography work is done, there will be no recital routine for this class.

If this sounds like a class you or your child would enjoy, then please check out our 2011-2012 Dance Class Page for information on registration as well as other classes our dance studio will be offering this fall.

Nationally Recognized Dance Studio in Charlotte Has Busy March

My dance studio, Dancers Unite, had a very busy March!

The first weekend in March, some of our Competition Company Members performed at the White Oak Manor Retirement Community in the Cotswold neighborhood of Charlotte, performing jazz and lyrical routines.

The next two weekends our competition company dancers were hard at work competing at local dance competitions.  Our dancers took home gold medals, trophies, special judges’ and overall awards and scholarships to dance intensives!

Then during the last weekend of March our Competition Company Members as well as some other special DU dancers performed the opening number for the Peek-a-Boo Couture Fashion Show (Peek-a-Boo Couture is a children’s boutique located on Metropolitan Avenue in Charlotte)!  They performed jazz, tap, hip hop and musical theater dance routines.

March was also a special month for DU because 9 of our dancers were chosen to dance at the halftime show of the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida this January!

We are very proud of all the hard work our dancers put in and the beautiful dancers they have become over the year.  We hope April is just as special as March was for our dance studio!
